Webster obtained a long-range planning grant in 2014 from the Southwestern Commission through the Appalachian Regional Commission. The town’s efforts focused on improving walkability and health along with community cohesion, preserving, enriching and featuring the historic town and refining its zoning ordinances. The Town of Webster partnered with Western Carolina University's business student team program in 2015 to gather feedback from Webster residents on a number of topics. The student team, 'Winning Webster' distributed 135 surveys door-to-door in town and received 66 combined responses between online and mail-in surveys.
